Our internships for students from other countries are a fantastic opportunity for them to experience real working life in Glasgow - and for our host employers to get to know motivated young people from new places and get some help.
You've got questions. We've got answers.
The interns we work with are either European interns from vocational schools or university students, generally from English-speaking countries.
The vocational school students will have quite a lot of practical experience from their course and the university students we get tend to be very motivated.
You need to be a registered organisation with a company or charity number. Beyond that, it depends on the student.
With current visa rules, non-profits can host unpaid internships for up to six weeks (or 30 total working days).
Students with dual UK citizenship can work any sector of organisation and for longer though, and we sometimes get these students. (US and Australia so far.) North Americans can also get special visas through BUNAC for longer internships.
The UK and EU are now "working towards" setting up a Youth Experience Scheme and getting the UK back into the Erasmus+ programme, so when these come to fruition, there will be even more opportunities.
It all depends on your work and the intern's skills and interests. They could take part in daily tasks or work on a project, or a mix. You can work this out when we get in touch with a specific intern.
A Plan - Every intern is different and you may have different opportunities at different times, but creating a learning plan for the specific intern will make it much easier for you to manage your intern and for you both to get a lot of value out of the experience.
A place to work together - If your organisation has a physical space, perfect! if you work remotely, you can still host an intern, but you will need a place to work together. We can recommend free places.
Organisation insurance - you should have this anyway, but you might let want to your insurers know about your extra person. Interns are also covered by travel insurance by their sending organisation.
We organise their preparation, accommodation, airport transfer, travel pass, orientation and introduction, so you can focus on enjoying hosting your intern.
We don't charge you anything - you're a supplier of a great experience to us.
The internships are unpaid. Those coming under the Standard Visitor Visa rules can't be paid because they're "volunteering with a registered charity" for the ones (though CICs are fine). The Erasmus+ students from Europe have their living expenses covered by European funding and the ones from further afield are getting fantastic experience that is hard to get at home. Win-win!
You might have some extra expenses like uniforms or an extra email address, but that's all.
The interns coming here from other countries normally work full time, though occasionally we have requests for days off for cultural outings. When we start to get hybrid internships - part remote and then part in person, the remote part may be part-time.
The internships are driven by bookings by partners in other countries - vocational schools in Europe or agencies in America - so for now, it's when we get a relevant request. However, if you register with us, we can let partner know that internships with you are available so they can promote them.
The university students tend to come during their summer break (our winter in Australia) and the vocational students come during term time.
"I would encourage it greatly, especially as everything for the student has been planned out already. I would say that Discover Glasgow got this part absolutely spot on!"
"I don’t think we could’ve asked for a better experience with an international, hosted internship. Juniper is extremely professional, understands their process and the application of it, fit in to the team and made connections throughout the collective. Culturally and socially, Juniper fit in to the fabric of the community and the others they were exposed to and met."
"[Hosting an intern has been] a great learning experience for us as a team, our volunteers really enjoyed the different things Max brought to the cake stand. [Thinking about hosting?] Go for it!"
